Health-Conscious Series # 11 - How to get rid of Molluscum contagiosum

Updated on March 23, 2013

The verdict: "Remove or cauterize it," my doctor said.

Molluscum contagiosum or wart-like papules or nodules on my face hindered the total approval of my medical examination that is a pre-requisite to work overseas.

This hubber is an OFW (Overseas-Filipino Worker) since 2001. I got those painless problems on my face through the old towels or infected beddings that the senior officers gave and assigned to me.

At first, the other out-patient clinics let me passed the medical exam until this year, 2012.

And it happened that the occurrence of this painless visible dots are now occupying most parts of my face.

So, the medical outpatient clinic recommended me to one of the most available dermatologist in town.

After a mild argument with my physician who strictly directed me to undergo cauterization, off I went last week.

After the procedure from the most affordable dermatologist and his aesthetician (the one who cauterized my molluscum contagiosum or mc for short), you can see the transformation of my face as the procedure dominated red-bloody dots on my face.

I went home via LRT (Light Rain Transit) ride amid the curious glances of fellow passengers. All the speculations precipitated as I tried ignoring their negative thoughts.

Beauty these days will always be excruciatingly painful as I revive my once-flawless face (all pimple marks are not visible-lol!).

Anyway, on a lighter note, I limited my activities by just staying at home for the last three days.

As instructed, I applied the hydrocortizone cream on each wound. Still, I slept peacefully, ignoring the tingling pain on my face.

I still have to apply the bleaching cream after a week or as those little wounds healed thoroughly and submit myself again for the final verdict of the medical institution the company obliged me to undergo the medical examination.

How to avoid it: Molluscum contagiosum

Most of the seafarers and other OFWs are inflicted with this kind of infection from poxvirus family.

In order to avoid it:

  1. Bring your own face and bath towels on board ship.
  2. Avoid borrowing other things, like caps, personal toiletries or used soaps, pillow cases or pillows or bed sheets and blankets.
  3. Don't buy secondhand clothing. You might get infection from it.

If it's a sexually-related, avoid making contacts with other, through their towels, clothing or toys or even laptop computer.

For my part, it's not sexually-related. Thanks, God!

My resolution, as I work on board, is to bring my personal things and never borrow those used towels, bed sheets or pillow cases from ship's linen room.

And avoid hanging out with infected ones, as much as possible; I hope it will delay the recurrence of Molluscum contagiosum on my face.

I will never let it spread on my neck, arms or other parts of my body, except my palms and soles, as visible symptoms appear.

If you noticed that there's those painless papules already growing in some parts of your body, immediately consult a dermatologist for proper treatment.

Note: My personal thanks to my relatives who helped me paid for my medication. Well, my budget is so tight, nowadays. I can't bear to lose my job just because of this virus.
