Do you have gifted children?

I pose this question because more and more factors of knowing that your child or children belong to the gifted ones are being implemented to help enhance their abilities and not just put into wastes. I’ve seen programs showing different wizardry of highly exceptional children when it comes to intelligence. With this note, I should also delve in finding the roots of all these bravados. Let’s start finding these children from their respective homes.

The Thing called ‘Giftedness’

A ‘gifted child’ shows above average in thinking and has full of interest or enthusiasm in many areas as in logic and mathematics, body kinetics , science, arts and music. They usually excel in many areas of expression.

Potentially gifted children start showing their exceptional prowess at an early age. Parents oftentimes didn’t know how to handle the situation properly because they have their jobs or duties to attend to. There are many support groups that are helping parents to cope up with such kind of situation. The very firsts they should do is to know the basic steps in officially recognizing the ample potentials of their children in many aspects.

Measuring I.Q. (Intelligence Quotient)

The Levels of Giftedness based on their IQ is not the sole basis of measuring their giftedness. Nevertheless, it will help the parents to know the level of intelligence of their children.

Gifted Children in the Philippines

Nowadays, the Philippine Association for the Gifted (PAG) are not only measuring the abilities of the identified gifted children but also encourage the support of their parents.

Leticia Penano-Ho, Ph.D.,President and Chairperson of PAG emphasizes on the indicators of children who are gifted.

At an early age, before 1 year old, a gifted child can talk clearly and can complete sentences, then into phrases. He/she is also a wide reader kid.

The asynchrony or the ups and downs of a gifted child should also be considered at the later stage because of various interests that a child will be focusing.

As the IQ level tapers off, the testing should be done during the mid-elementary grades when a gifted child shows consistency in achievement, whether it’s intellectually or socially.

Parents of Gifted Children

The most proud ones of multi-talented kids are the parents. The dilemmas of guiding them to hone their talents should be directed to Parents Support Group. They should talk about the development of their kids and identify the areas they excel. They should also delve on the problems that kids encounter while adjusting to the outside world.

Maintaining and sustaining the growth and talent of gifted children can be costly. Those who are financially capable can develop their potentials while those who are poor can limit their resources to further enhance their talents.

With the support group composed of parents and specialists, poor but mentally advanced children can now have vast opportunities that can help them further enhance their gifts.

Perfectionist Strap

“I don’t want to fall for that kind of attitude,”19-year old Chino Guttierez quips during an interview in a Sunday morning show, Salamat Dok (Thanks Doc produced by ABS-CBN). “I’m just an ordinary, typical guy with few friends who can relate to me. I don’t want to be that popular. I’m okay with few people who can understand me,” he added.

Chino Guttierez is a multi-talented Filipino teenager who excels in many fields. During his elementary grade, he already studied and solved high school level of mathematical problems.

While he’s growing up, his interests are also varying like excelling in music especially in violin. With this achievement, he got a scholarship in Germany and the first non-Bavarian to top violin competition. He also topped in Science and Math competitions in Europe.

While he was there, he co-authored a book written in Latin language. He is also a multi-lingual individual, which is an ordinary thing for a gifted individual.

The Wonders of Tamura kids

Cecille Gumba-Tamura, Vice President of PAG had also set of children who belongs to the gifted ones.

The eldest, Cy Tamura, now 16 years old first graced the media mileage when he composed his musical libretto, The Magic Staff, at the age of 8. At present he is perfecting his musical compositions through mathematical equation.

Yosh Tamura, 12 years old, has a photographic memory that at the age of two can really memorize plate numbers and can remember what he had done at an early age.

Meanwhile, Aya, 8 year old and the only girl can solve puzzles fast and create Haiku (Japanese short poem) creatively.

Some Geniuses and all

Albert Einstein can be considered the all-time most popular genius in the world who created the famous formula of relativity: e=mc2.

Worth mentioning, too is William Shakespeare, the equally famous English playwright who gave us many masterpieces in theater arts, like Romeo and Juliet.

As for me, I reached the IQ level of 126 when I underwent series of tests on abstract reasoning, comprehension and logic and analytical math and science. Not bad for an average man with various interests in life.

How about you, are you a gifted one? Do you believe in the jargon that 'geniuses are not made, they are born'?

I'm not too good in Mathematics, but I can also formulate new formulas to solve some problems easily. The technique we usually use is FOIL (first, out, in, last) for solution. Good luck to you, bacville and thanks for always commenting my hubs.

Hello, Jasmine. Thanks for the comment and hub-visit. All I knew was that I was supposed to be accelerated one grade higher when I was in Grade I butt never transpired. I made this article because the show "Salamat Dok"of ABS-CBN happened to feature the gifted children, their family and the support group. You can still check the PAG's hotline at 687-1122 or 0927-597-9103 or you can check this site:

Hi, maila. The best thing to do is refer the problem to the principal. They should be the one correcting the error. If they didn't do it, you can inform the Department of Education sub-office of their faults.

What a wonderful hub just filled with great information. My children were tested years ago. Two of the are moderately gifted, one is mildly gifted. I found, in our case that the most important thing with the highly gifted children is to help focus them in a direction of their own and to not push them so hard that they rebell and all of the work is for naught.

Rated up and useful.

Thanks for rating this hub up, KoffeeKlatch Gals. The guidance of parents is a must when they have these sets of gifted children, like you said it.

StageDad 19 months ago

My son is gifted. I know this by sheer comparison to adults 3 times his age and in the same field.

http://vimeo.com/15222385

I can't be any prouder. I don't really know though if he was born with it or he made himself into it. Like I always tell people when asked, I bought him an electric guitar one day, and the next day he's rocking out. In a matter of 3-4 months, he was already playing virtuoso pieces from Steve Vai, Eric Johnson etc. He's only been playing less than 2 years now.

There's one thing that I haven't seen anyone address yet: A child gifted with passion. People have measure giftedness with IQ,skill, etc. But what I have seen in my son, watching him practice 4-6 hours a day without even telling him to do so and fearlessly tackle difficult songs in days (months to the regular practitioner) and not stop until he gets it done is his gift, the talent is just a byproduct.

Nice hub!

@StageDad: I'm sure, you're too proud of your son's exceptional dedication in music. A full support is needed to let him excel in his field of interest.

You're right, the talent is 1 per cent inspiration but 99 perspiration. Concentration is a must in learning especially to gifted children, like yours.

ARMIE S. LAMPA 12 months ago

hi! I have a 5 yr old son a very smart and s suspected to be gifted by me and so many people who have seen his abilities. At 6 months old he uttered MAMA SO clearly. Age 1, can write a lot of shapes. Age 2, memorized the alphabet and sings them in three different tunes, and can write his name, and numbers 1-10. At age 3 he memorized 26 NBA PLAYERS in a deck of cards with their names, jersey number, jersey color and team even if we turn the cards upside down. At 3 he can read and was a COMPUTER WHIZ excel, word powerpoint, chess, machinarium, programs his own game ans troubleshoots. at 4 he started schooling and ranked 1 out of 26 studs who were no longer first timers and was the best in academic performance in all subjects. talks a lot about supernova, blackhole, galaxy, gravity, types of clouds, oxygen, photosynthesis, figures of speech and a lot more topic that even adults gets shocked. We enrolled him at Montessori to address his desire to learn cuz he was so bored in his previous school.

@ARMI S. LAMPA: Yes, he's really gifted! You must contact someone at PAG (Philippine Association for the Gifted) to cope up with the demands of having a child like him. Please refer to other comments above and see my link. They're most happy to help you because most of the officers and members are parents with gifted children, too. Good luck!

@Anthea Carson: Thanks for your appreciation. Kids are just giving back on how the way their parents nurture them. With good environment at home and sufficient provision of basic needs of the children, they will surely excel in everything they want to venture into in the future.

@jane palma: Congratulations for having a son like that. Well, you can also ask your doctor about it. He should be at the special school for the gifted. That's the only thing I can suggest.

As for me, if not only for the opposition I've metwith my parents, I can also excel in many things during my childhood. We live in the barrio and transportation and money were the major problems.

If you have enough fund to enrol him at the Philippine Association for the Gifted, then do it now.

Good luck!!!

hi, just want to ask something about my older sister since ima bit curious if she is gifted or not. My mom told me about the things my sister used to do back when she was just a child. By 2 months she uttered the word "mama", by 4 months she could discern proper positions of bottles and would turn them over if mom turns it upside down, says complete sentences by 6 months like "am i going to eat now mom", learned how to draw before 1 year (dad saved one drawing she did by 1 year and 4 months and it was about an octopus with a hat beside a table), plays jigsaw puzzles and legos, ask a lot of questions over and over but was really bad at math and spelling. She could remember things she just saw for the first time but really sucked at school. When we were teenagers she would usually asked me if i ever thought about the purpose of humanity and why we existed and what is the point of doing things since we are all going to die, and I was speechless most of the time. She would often ask what was her purpose in life ( come to think of it she was actually depressed a lot). Mom said that her pediatrician said my sister is gifted but im having doubts because shes having trouble passing math.

travel_man1971 profile image

travel_man1971 Hub Author 4 months ago

@toby: My apology for this late answer on your comment.

Well, if that's the case with your older sister, it is because of savant syndrome. She may have a photographic memory but she'll fail in other fields, like mathematics.

Yet, there are many great and famous people who have this limitations, and they're still 'gifted' to me.

Please follow my link here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savant_syndrome

Anyways, thanks for opening up this subject. Please give my regards to your older sister.

Is there a way to identify if a kid under 12-month-old is gifted? There are people talking about signs of early motor skills or profound vocabulary. I had IQ test when I was 12 that scored at above 150. But I didn't show any sign in terms of motor skills or vocabulary. I'm good in math/science/art subjects at school but suck at writing even now as a grown up. Me and my husband came from different countries. There are 4 languages we speak in the family. The main care takers for my 11-month-old are my mom and in-laws. I'm not sure if my son is overwhelmed by 4 languages. I think my son is very very smart in terms of logical thinking but others said the example I gave is just a norm for a 11-month-old. I don't want to be a pushy parent or a wishful parent. I just want to identify if my son is gifted as early as possible so I can give him the help he needs. As I mentioned earlier I was scored above 150 at age of 12, but at that time no one in my family give a damn about it. Both of my parents were not highly educated (12 grade & 9 grade) due to the fact they were born and raised during WWII and later civil war. My parents were so focus on bringing food on table and they had overlooked my needs when I was a kid. That's why I'm asking if there is a way to identify a gifted younger kid who doesn't yet read and write? Also, do you know at what age a kid has 3 dimensional spacial sense? For example, when a baby tries to crawl under a sofa, s/he usually got stuck by her/his head since they only have view of their eye level. At what point they finally figure out their head which they cannot see was the reason they got stuck by sofa? And at what age they figure out if they lower their head they can easily go in/out under a sofa? Appreciated your reply in advance.

@caca1225: Thanks for sharing your experience with your child.

Really, baby geniuses are exploring their new-found skills and in-born talents during the formative years, from 1 to 2 years old.

The Parents Support Group of Philippine Association for the Gifted (PAG) will surely help you with your dilemmas.

3 dimensional spatial sense has been with kids since they are honing their cognitive skills at an early age. I cannot pinpoint the exact age but scientists will attest that it is during their first two years that this skills/talent in distinguishing three-dimensional objects or geometrical shapes are apparent.

Hahaha, well, until now I also got my head stuck under a sofa whenever I'm looking or searching for lost objects.

I still haven't figure out that my brain is bigger than my eyes. (Pun intended).

Thanks for your time caca1225.
