PCOS, PMS and Gestational Diabetes among Women

Consult your doctor…three words that should be given a priority when we talk about women’s concerns, like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Gestational Diabetes. These three health problems are becoming serious to many women. My sisters experienced PMS and some mothers in our place suffer from gestational diabetes.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
Women who experience PCOS doesn’t produce too much eggs, that’s why they have irregular menstruation. Instead, their bodies secrete androgen that is a hormone for men.
According to Diana Sarmiento, MD, OB Gynecologist, only two-thirds or 60 % of the women in the Philippines suffer from irregular menstruation. Some indications of having PCOS are having facial hairs or beard, pimples that keep surfacing on their faces and gained weight.
Women with PCOS are prone to diabetes, hypertension or high blood pressure and demetrial cancer or ovarian cancer.
There are married women who still experience this irregularity. What they did was consulted their doctors then followed the things recommended for the cure. Dra. Sarmiento and other gynecologists gave their patients pills with anti-androgen that can cure PCOS. By documenting the symptoms through ultrasound, doctors can easily assess the problems of their women-patients. Fertility tablets can also help PCOS mothers to ovulate.
Another thing is that PCOS can be genetic in origin , especially for women who are prone to diabetes due to their family history.
Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS)
Women who suffer from PMS are often irritable or having a short span of control or temper. Doctors said that the regular menstrual cycle of women is always 28 days. If the cycle didn’t jive with the regular period, then it is high time to consult your obstetrician. Contraceptive pills help regulate menstrual cycle. Herbal doctors recommend the boiled flowers of butunes-butunesan (button herbs) to strengthen the muscles of the ovary. The herb is rich in phytoestrogen that is necessary for the cure.
Gestational Diabetes
During pregnancy, many women experience gained weight or overweight, frequent urination, thinning and losing strength.
William Cua, MB, Endocrinologist advises that pregnant women should consult their doctors for effective advises.
Gestational diabetes can be fatal because once a mother delivers her baby, her blood sugar level drops that can lead to cardiac arrest. A stillborn baby or overweight baby will be the result of this problem.
It's not easy being a woman, right? Respect for them should be given without hesitation.
